The Chairman of the Kano State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Alhaji Ibrahim Jibril Fagge, has led a high-level management delegation on an official local government service commission study tour to Oyo State.

This strategic visit aims to modernise Kano local government administration and significantly boost institutional capacity within the state. Speaking during a working session at the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission in Ibadan on Thursday, Fagge described the initiative as a deliberate, forward-thinking engagement.

He noted that the partnership will promote inter-state collaboration, exchange critical operational ideas, and deepen the collective understanding of best practices to elevate Nigerian public service delivery.

Re-establishing the Kano Local Government Administration Framework

The push to revitalise local governance follows a period of deliberate legislative restructuring in Kano. Ibrahim, who travelled alongside senior officials Ahmad Bala UlGiri, Aliyu M. Sani, Abdul Ibrahim, Musa Kalamu Muhammad, Muhammad Bala, and Suleiman Abdullahi, disclosed that the Kano State Government re-established the Local Government Service Commission through a law passed on March 2, 2026.

This legislative milestone directly followed key recommendations by a specialized committee constituted in 2024 to review and amend the enabling framework.

According to the commission chairman, the extensive local government service commission study tour became vital to enable Kano State officials to learn directly from the established experiences of Oyo State.

The team is focusing heavily on critical administrative areas, including recruitment standards, staff training, promotion guidelines, disciplinary procedures, retirement processes, and the overarching legal structure and mandate of the commission.

“The local government system remains the closest tier of government to the people. Its effectiveness directly impacts the quality of life of our citizens. This visit provides us with a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, compare administrative frameworks and adopt best practices that will enhance service delivery in Kano State,” Fagge said.

Unlocking Oyo State Local Government Reforms

Welcoming the visiting delegation, the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, Bashorun Akinwale Solomon Akinwole, described the visit as a clear demonstration of unity, collaboration, and a shared national commitment to effective Nigerian public service delivery.

Akinwole stated that Oyo State remains fiercely committed to institutional development through the open exchange of ideas and operational experiences with sister states. He observed that no state can achieve sustainable development in isolation.

He highlighted several milestone Oyo State local government reforms and achievements recorded by the commission under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde. These infrastructure investments include the construction of the ultra-modern Local Government House and a 300-seat Staff Training School, both built to enhance staff welfare and productivity.

Driving Efficiency and Grassroots Progress

The Oyo chairman further noted that the commission has introduced multiple administrative innovations to improve worker morale. These include decentralized promotion exercises for local government officers, targeted capacity-building programmes for principal officers, and special recognition awards for retired Heads of Local Government Administration. The state is also finalising plans to automate key operational processes for improved efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

Akinwole stated that the commission’s activities are regularly showcased through its official publication, The OYLGSC, alongside various social media platforms to promote public awareness and transparency.

He expressed deep confidence that the study visit would further strengthen the relationship between Oyo and Kano states while contributing to improved governance and service delivery at the grassroots level.

The extensive visit featured interactive sessions between officials of both commissions, focusing heavily on modern administrative procedures, workforce development, and broader strategies for strengthening Kano local government administration and similar institutions across the country.
