The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Memorial Foundation, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, has announced a programme to commemorate the 60th remembrance of the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, former Premier of the defunct Western Nigeria and the 13th Aare-Onakakanfo of Yorubaland.

Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola (1910-1966) was a prominent Nigerian lawyer, journalist, orator, and politician, serving as the second and last Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region, a founding father of modern Nigeria, and the 13th Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba people, tragically assassinated during Nigeria’s first military coup in January 15, 1966.

According to a statement signed by the Foundation coordinator Mr Yemi Adedokun and PRO Remi Oladoye, the remembrance ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

The anniversary is part of efforts to reflect on the political ideals, leadership philosophy and enduring contributions of the late statesman to regional and national development.

Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, will be a guest speaker at the event, alongside Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun, former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, all South-West governors, as well as other invited state governors from across the country are special guests of honour.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja is the Chairman of the Day while Chief (Amb.) Abayomi Akintola, Dr. Abimbola Akintola, and Justice Ladiran Akintola, are the chief hosts.

According to the foundation, the remembrance will provide a platform to honour the legacy of Chief Akintola, who served as Premier of Western Nigeria until his death in 1966, and to re-examine his role in the political evolution of the old Western Region and Nigeria.
