BREAKING NEWS: Lionel Messi Officially Retires From Argentina National Team

Lionel Messi Argentina Retirement

In a historic and emotional announcement on Monday, Lionel Messi has officially confirmed his retirement from the Argentina national team. The 39-year-old captain shared a heartfelt goodbye letter via social media, bringing an end to his 20-year international career with La Albiceleste.

Messi revealed that he drafted the farewell statement just two days after Argentina’s 1–0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19. His decision was further solidified following the tragic passing of his father and longtime representative, Jorge Messi, who died on August 7 at the age of 68 in Rosario.

“After all this time since the final, after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team.

It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment. I swear I always gave everything, not only in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too.

I always fought and gave everything for this shirt, to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football. There isn’t much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot. I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team.

I gave everything I had, I don’t have anything more to give.

There are great young players coming through who deserve to be here. Thank you for all the love during these 20 years. I’m going to miss hearing you from the inside. Now I’ll be one of you, always supporting from the outside, in the good times and even more in the bad ones.

Thank you to my family for always being there and for being with me throughout this beautiful but difficult journey. Thank you to every coach, teammate and director I had the chance to share it with. I take with me unforgettable memories and moments.

I leave with peace and pride, knowing that together with my teammates we gave you moments we once dreamed of. It was crazy to experience all of this with you. I love you!

  1. Thank you God for making me Argentine.

Vamos Argentina!

PS: I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced of this decision than before.”

Context & Key Insights Behind the Decision

1. The Post-World Cup Final Turning Point

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final loss to Spain marked Messi’s final appearance in the Argentine jersey. Having achieved the pinnacle of international success by lifting the 2022 World Cup trophy alongside two Copa América titles, Messi concluded his international journey after leading Argentina through six separate World Cup tournaments.

2. The Personal Loss of His Father, Jorge Messi

The decision was heavily influenced by personal grief. Jorge Messi passed away in Rosario on August 7, 2026, following a prolonged illness. As his agent, representative, and primary confidant throughout his career, Jorge’s passing solidified Messi’s commitment to step away from international duties and spend more time with his immediate family.

3. Club Career Continuation

Messi’s retirement applies strictly to the Argentina national team. He continues his professional club career with Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, where he recently returned to action with a 4-goal performance against CF Montréal.
