A Nigerian adventurer and humanitarian has taken to his bike for an extraordinary cross-continental London-to-Lagos cycling challenge. Captain Olatunji Emmanuel Okedeyi launched the gruelling expedition to power a crucial end-polio campaign, turning miles on the road into vital financial support for vulnerable children.

The brave cyclist, who began his epic journey just over a week ago, is already pushing through Morocco. He expects to cross the Mauritanian border very soon as he keeps pedalling hard towards his final destination in Nigeria.

Mapping the London to Lagos Cycling Route

The long trek has already seen the cyclist tackle tough roads across major European and North African cities. His route has taken him through Paris in France, San Sebastián and Madrid in Spain, and down through Malaga. From there, he crossed into North Africa, cycling hard through Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir, Laayoun, and Dakhla. This incredible feat shows immense physical strength and a deep personal drive to support global polio eradication.

The inspiring campaign carries the official title “London to Lagos: Two Wheels, One Mission to End Polio.” Speaking openly about what pushes him forward, Okedeyi revealed that growing up in a home full of medical experts shaped his worldview. He firmly believes that basic healthcare is a right that belongs to everyone.

Behind the End Polio Campaign

The long-distance ride aims to inject new life into the global fight to wipe out polio for good. It comes at a critical moment when health workers around the world are working tirelessly to clear the final few hurdles to beat the virus.

“Growing up in a home where healthcare was a way of life taught me that prevention is the ultimate cure. Polio remains one of the diseases the world has the power to eradicate completely, and I want to contribute to that mission,” he said.

To get everyday people and businesses involved, Okedeyi set up a brilliant scheme called the “Kilometre Club.” The club lets people sponsor distinct parts of its long route.

Financing Global Polio Eradication

High-profile backers have already stepped up to champion the cause. Prince Yinka Afonja, the Chief Executive Officer of Ace Mall, stands out as a key sponsor helping to drive the charity ride forward. Under the rules of the club, a donation of just £10 funds exactly one kilometre of the vast distance between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

The cash raised on the road goes directly to essential front-line services:

  • Vital childhood vaccination programmes.
  • Specialist cold-chain transport systems to keep vaccines chilled and safe.
  • Crucial rehabilitation work, such as physical therapy and mobility equipment for polio survivors.

The 10,000-Kilometre Journey to Nigeria

Okedeyi pointed out that the entire trip will cover well over 10,000 kilometres. The journey forces him to handle harsh weather, rough roads, and unpredictable daily challenges. Yet, despite the heavy physical toll, he remains highly confident that his growing team of donors and well-wishers will keep his spirits high all the way to the finish line.

For the cyclist, the ride is also a beautiful personal link between his modern life in the United Kingdom and his deep Nigerian roots. It serves as a stark reminder that the hard-won victories against the virus must be guarded closely.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Nigeria entirely free of wild poliovirus back in 2020, a historic moment celebrated across Africa. Even so, medical experts warn that steady vaccination work must continue to ensure the virus never returns. As he edges closer to West Africa, Okedeyi hopes his journey will move everyday citizens and big firms to help make polio history.
