The Oyo State Government unveiled an official Oyo cultural anthem on Wednesday in Ibadan to strengthen regional heritage preservation.

The announcement, made during the joint World Sango Festival and Duro Ladipo Memorial Symposium at the Cultural Centre in Mokola, marks a deliberate policy shift toward embedding traditional Yoruba identity into state administration. Under the new directive, authorities will play the anthem at all official cultural and Isese-related events immediately following the Oyo State anthem.

Alongside the protocol shift, state officials formally petitioned higher tiers of government to convert the Ibadan residence of the late playwright and cultural pioneer Duro Ladipo into a national monument and public museum.

The multi-pronged initiative highlights growing efforts by sub-national governments in South-Western Nigeria to institutionalise indigenous history amidst broader conversations regarding West African heritage management.

State Mandates Oyo Cultural Anthem to Anchor Regional Identity

Speaking at the gathering, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, described the creation of the musical emblem as a structural measure to safeguard ancestral traditions for future generations.

Dr Olatubosun noted that the first two editions of the memorial symposium took place at the late dramatist’s private home, demonstrating the site’s organic importance to local historians.

“Transforming it into a cultural site would serve as a lasting tribute to his invaluable contributions to Yoruba heritage,” Dr Olatubosun said.

The symposium brought together key custodian groups, including Ladipo’s widow, Mrs Biodun Duro-Ladipo, alongside traditional religion practitioners representing all 33 local government areas of Oyo State.

Clarifying Traditional Lineage and Institutional Preservation

The event also addressed historical interpretations within Yoruba traditional religion, particularly regarding the deity Sango and the historic Oyo Empire.

Dr Fayemi Ifakayode, President of the International Council of Ifa Religion, clarified the theological distinction between the celestial deity and the historical monarch.

The Sango worshipped in Yoruba traditional religion is Sango Ayilegbe-orun, one of the messengers of Olodumare who descended from the celestial realm,” Dr Ifakayode explained. He added that the third Alaafin of Oyo “should not be mistaken for the deity, noting that the Alaafin was regarded as an incarnation of the divine figure.

Cultural advocates at the symposium warned against the gradual erosion of West African historic records due to inadequate physical infrastructure and shifting social values.

Prince Tunde Odunlade, a prominent arts advocate, urged local populations to retain their ancestral practices rather than abandon their historical identity.

By elevating a regional anthem to official state protocol and seeking federal protection for mid-century literary sites, Oyo State establishes a concrete legal and symbolic framework for municipal heritage defense.
