Seven people died after gunmen launched an attack on Tsamaye Village in northwest Nigeria. The Sokoto bandit attackĀ began at approximately 8:30 pm on Tuesday in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. Armed assailants laid siege to the settlement for over six hours, finally departing around 3:00 am on Wednesday.

During the raid, the attackers targeted local worshippers, ransacked commercial shops, set a vehicle alight, and rustled an unspecified quantity of livestock.

Villagers recovered seven bodies from the scene after the gunmen withdrew into the surrounding terrain. Three of the deceased were shot inside a local mosque during evening prayers.

According to community members, five of those killed were displaced persons who had previously fled neighbouring settlements to seek shelter in Tsamaye. The remaining two victims were residents.

The raiders executed a tactical manoeuvre at the start of the assault by surrounding the local security post. By opening direct fire on the facility, the gunmen pinned down security personnel inside, blocking any immediate counter-offensive.

“We were sitting after the Isha’i prayer when the bandits invaded our village. They first surrounded the security operatives stationed in the community and opened fire on them. They laid siege to their location, preventing them from coming out, while other members of the group moved from house to house, rustling livestock, looting valuables and abducting residents,” an eyewitness said.

The exact number of abducted villagers remains unconfirmed as scores of residents fled into adjacent bushes during the dark.

“We believe some people escaped because of the confusion. It is only later today that we may be able to ascertain the actual number of those abducted,” the witness noted.

Families have confirmed the abduction of at least three individuals after calling their mobile phones, which were answered directly by the captors holding them in custody.

Residents noted that local security forces faced overwhelming numbers during the surprise assault.

Our security personnel have always been doing their best to protect us and even assist neighbouring communities in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. This time, however, the bandits took them by surprise and prevented them from coming to our rescue,” the resident added.

Police authorities in Sokoto State confirmed knowledge of the raid but stated that investigations remain ongoing.

“We are aware of the incident, but we are yet to get full details as we await it,” said DSP Ahmad Rufai, spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command.

Sokoto Bandit Attack Exposes Flaws in Rural Security Strategy

This latest assault underlines a troubling shift in the operational tactics of armed groups across north-west Nigeria. By pinning down security outposts before raiding civilian homes, these groups demonstrate an increasing ability to neutralise local defence measures.

The incident highlights the acute vulnerability of displaced populations. Thousands of rural citizens in Sokoto State have fled their home villages due to persistent Sabon Birni violence, seeking safety in larger settlements.

When bandits breach these designated safe havens, internal refugee networks collapse. The death of five displaced persons inside Tsamaye proves that fleeing primary settlements no longer guarantees protection from armed groups.

The strategic location of Sabon Birni, near the international border with Niger, compounds these operational challenges. Border terrain allows armed networks to execute raids and retreat across jurisdictional boundaries before state forces can coordinate a response.

Rising Toll on Displaced Communities in Sabon Birni

Rural communities in Sokoto State rely heavily on agriculture and pastoral livestock. Systematic cattle rustling and shop looting directly strip rural settlements of their economic capital, leaving survivors without livelihoods.

The broader security outlook across north-west Nigeria remains strained as federal security forces balance resources between counter-banditry operations in the west and counter-insurgency tasks in the north-east.

Without permanent, heavily armed quick-response units in rural hubs, remote settlements like Tsamaye remain exposed to prolonged raids. Local communities face an urgent choice between total abandonment of their land or continued exposure to sudden night attacks.
