Oyo political defections are a transfer of loyalties driven by personal ambition rather than the welfare of residents, according to Dapo Falade, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Governor Seyi Makinde and Deputy Director of the Allied People Movement (APM) Governorship Campaign Council.
Falade spoke in an interview on Dominion 106.1FM, reacting to the recent resignations of commissioners and special assistants, including the Chief of Staff to the governor. He described the timing as politically motivated.
Oyo Political Defections: “Everything Is About Politics”
Falade noted that cross-carpeting is not new in Nigeria and dates back to the First Republic. He questioned why some politicians would leave their platforms after more than five years, suggesting the moves were part of a calculated strategy.
He compared the movements to transfers in European football, arguing that anyone joining a party should bring something tangible. In his view, political participation should serve the greater good of the people, not individual ambitions.
Oyo Political Defections and the APM Governorship Campaign
Asked how the Chief of Staff’s resignation might affect the aspiration of Bimbo Adekanmbi, the APM governorship candidate, Falade said no individual is indispensable and that political structures should not depend on one personality. He said the campaign remains united and active.
He recalled that resignations under former Governor Abiola Ajimobi raised doubts about the government’s electoral chances, yet Ajimobi won re-election and became the first Oyo governor to serve two consecutive terms. Political realignments, he argued, do not automatically decide election outcomes.
Oyo Political Defections and Governor Makinde’s Succession
Falade dismissed claims that Governor Makinde had handpicked a successor, saying the governor signed no pact with any aspirant to succeed him from 29 May 2027. He described Makinde as calm and composed under pressure.
On speculation that the governor’s presidential ambition is affecting governance, Falade said it has not distracted him. He said Makinde remains actively involved in running the state with support from his deputy and appointees.
Oyo Political Defections Ahead of the 2027 Governorship Election
Falade said the resignations have not changed the lives of ordinary residents and largely reflect political calculations. Citing the principle that politics has no permanent enemies, only permanent interests, he said motives would become clearer as the political season advances.
He expressed confidence in the APM’s prospects, describing Adekanmbi as the most suitable candidate and predicting victory in the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.
