Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Barrister Wale Ojo-Lanre, has been honoured with the prestigious Tourism Trailblazer Award. This recognition, bestowed by the South West Hoteliers Association of Nigeria, celebrates his profound impact on Ekiti State tourism and his wider efforts to catalyse hospitality growth across the nation.

The accolade was presented during a vibrant Gala Dinner Night held at the Amazing Grace Event Center in Ado-Ekiti. The ceremony served as a celebratory conclusion to the association’s 5th Biennial Conference, gathering industry leaders to applaud Ojo-Lanre’s dedication. In a rare symbolic gesture, the association presented two plaques—one golden and one silver—to highlight the depth of their appreciation for his years of steadfast service.

Recognising a Legacy of Hospitality Growth

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Oluomo Jamiu Talabi, explained that the decision to honour Ojo-Lanre was rooted in his long-term consistency and practical support for the industry.

He noted that the Director-General’s relationship with the association spans over a decade, evolving from his early days as a media advocate to his current leadership role.

“I am glad to inform you that the Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Barrister Wale Ojo-Lanre, was an active participant at the first South West Zone conference of the Hoteliers Association about 10 years ago, when he delivered a goodwill message as the Tourism Editor of the Nigerian Tribune,” Talabi said.

Talabi further highlighted that Ojo-Lanre served as the Guest Speaker at the 4th Biennial Conference. This year, he deepened his commitment by delivering the keynote address and curating an immersive tour of the Arinta Waterfall in Ipole-Iloro for visiting members.

“The Association has not received such unflinching support from an individual. We are not only grateful to him, but proud to appreciate his immense contributions with this award. He is a true trailblazer. He has done well,” Talabi declared.

Driving Tourism Trailblazer Award Standards in Ekiti

The sentiment was echoed by the President of the Hoteliers Association of Nigeria, Ekiti State Branch, Hon. Akin Abimbola. He described Ojo-Lanre as a vital pillar and a dependable partner who has helped professionalise the local sector.

“He is an agrarian tourism promoter who pushes his efforts with ferocious passion for success. We are grateful to him for the success of this conference,” Abimbola said.

Widely recognised by his moniker “Alárìnká Àgbáyé”—meaning the global traveller—Ojo-Lanre brings a wealth of international experience to his domestic work. Having traversed over 86 countries, he uses this global perspective to elevate local standards. His recent initiatives, such as the unveiling of the Ugele Rock site alongside government dignitaries, demonstrate his tactical approach to placing under-explored sites on the map.

As the industry continues to evolve, this recognition serves as a testament to the power of committed leadership. For many attendees, the award is not merely a plaque, but a validation of Ojo-Lanre’s vision to place tourism at the heart of economic development. His work continues to provide a blueprint for states aiming to unlock the vast potential within their borders.
