The microblogging site, Twitter, has reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to suspend its operations in Nigeria.
TheCable reports Sarah Hart, Twitter’s Senior Policy Communications Manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, as saying that the company is investigating the development.
In an email response, she described the company’s suspension in Nigeria as deeply concerning.
Hart said: “The announcement made by the Nigerian Government that they have suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria is deeply concerning.
“We’re investigating and will provide updates when we know more.”
Recall that the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, accused Twitter of double standards for deleting a controversial post by the President Muhammadu Buhari on the Biafran war of 1967-1970 during which many lives were lost.
Speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday, Mohammed said <span;>Twitter<span;> had conveniently ignored inciting tweets by the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and others.
The minister said the social media giant also displayed the same bias during the #ENDSARS protest when government and private property were either looted or destroyed.
He said Twitter’s role is suspicious and Nigeria would not be fooled.
Meanwhile, Twitter’s suspension in Nigeria has been condemned by several social media users who accused the government of high handedness.
Recall that a former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamu Garba, had asked the Nigerian government to shut down the operations of Twitter in Nigeria.
