Elon Musk has warned that rapid AI job automation will leave human workers with no remaining tasks to perform.
Speaking to XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis at the Abundance Summit, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive predicted that artificial intelligence and humanoid robots will soon generate an abundance of goods and services that vastly exceeds human demand.
The main hurdle for future economies will not be managing structural unemployment, Mr Musk argued, but finding purpose in a society where machine output outpaces human consumption.
“Yeah, it’s basically AI, and robots are going to make so much stuff and provide so many services that they will actually run out of things to do for the humans,” Mr Musk said.
“They’ll just run out of things to do for the humans. There’s only so much that humans can even express that they want.”
The tech billionaire outlined a scenario where industrial productivity scales by hundreds or thousands of times its current capacity. Under these conditions, traditional labour markets would collapse, requiring states to re-engineer how wealth is distributed to citizens.

The projection marks a sharp departure from standard economic transition models. Historically, technological revolutions have destroyed specific roles while creating entirely new categories of employment. Mr Musk’s thesis suggests that autonomous systems will close that gap entirely, absorbing both physical and cognitive labour.
For policymakers, the threat is less about lost output and more about preserving systemic liquidity. If machines perform all gainful activity, the traditional feedback loop of wages funding private consumption breaks down. Without earning power, consumer demand—the engine of modern market economies—dries up, regardless of how cheaply goods are produced.
To prevent economic stagnation, Mr Musk stated that states must move past traditional safety nets like universal basic income and instead adopt direct, high-value dividend payments funded by hyper-productive automated infrastructure.
“I do think we’ll have universal high income. We’re basically just issuing money to people,” he said.
Production Scale and the Deflation Question
Critics of state-funded income guarantees often point to runaway inflation as an inevitable consequence of expanded money supplies. However, Mr Musk disputed the risk of hyperinflation under an economy dominated by advanced algorithms and hardware.
He argued that standard economic rules surrounding fiat issuance alter when real supply scales exponentially. If the volume of physical products and digital services grows faster than central banks issue currency, prices naturally decrease over time.

While Mr Musk presents this transition as an era of boundless material abundance, it poses severe immediate challenges for global governments. Regulators must decide how to tax autonomous capital, manage sovereign debt during the transition, and reconfigure education systems that currently train populations for a workforce that may soon cease to exist.
