Finally, UK Government Replies To #EndSARS Petitions From Nigerians Seeking Sanctions For Top Political Leaders

The government of the United Kingdom has finally responded to the petition by Nigerians seeking a commonwealth sanction on some political leaders during the #EndSARS protest.

It would be recalled that during the nationwide demonstration which was demanding good governance and an end to police brutality, a petition with 219,665 signatures was forwarded to the UK seeking that some top officials in government be sanctioned.

The disgruntled Nigerians told the UK government to invoke policy that allows it to sanction anyone that has no respect for human rights around the world on some top political officeholders.

Worthy to mention is that the UK Parliament often considers all petitions that have 100,000 signatures for a debate, a threshold which the #EndSARS petition from Nigeria passed with over 200,000 signatures.

But in a reply, the UK parliament said it is concerned about the security of Nigerians and the wanton destruction that later marred the protest in Lagos and other states.

The UK parliament also stated that it will wait for the conclusion of the investigation instituted by the Nigerian government into the numerous cases of police brutality.

However, the parliament stated that it would not talk publicly or speculate on “future sanctions designations.”

Recall that the Federal Government recently was able to freeze the accounts of 20 #EndSARS campaigners after telling a Federal High Court in Abuja that the funds in their accounts might have been linked to terrorist activities.

This is according to a written address in support of a motion ex parte filed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Ondo State, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, recently advised some supporters of recent #EndSARS Protest whose Bank Accounts were frozen by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Central Bank (CBN) to challenge the matter in court if they feel their accounts were unlawfully frozen or they were unjustly accused.
