Nigeria’s Flamingos have written a historic chapter in African football after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Saturday, November 7, to claim their maiden title in the competition.

Two first-half and early second-half goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku proved decisive as Nigeria held off a determined Japanese comeback to secure the trophy.

Fuki Ito pulled one goal back for Japan in the closing stages, setting up a tense finish, but the Flamingos maintained their advantage to complete a memorable victory.

The triumph represents a major breakthrough for Nigerian women’s football. Nigeria became the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, ending the continent’s long wait for a champion in the competition.

It also marks the first time an African women’s national team has won a FIFA World Cup title at any level.

Flamingos Start Strong Against Japan

The final brought together two sides with impressive tournament records and contrasting football styles.

Japan entered the contest with their trademark technical quality, quick passing and movement, while Nigeria relied on their physical strength, attacking pace and ability to threaten opponents in transition.

The Flamingos showed little sign of being intimidated by the occasion, approaching the final with confidence and determination.

Nigeria looked dangerous in the opening exchanges, putting Japan’s defence under pressure and searching for opportunities to take control of the contest.

Their attacking intent eventually produced the breakthrough in the 39th minute.

Awawu Bashiru Gives Nigeria the Lead

The deadlock was broken when Awawu Bashiru found the back of the net to give Nigeria a deserved 1-0 advantage.

Mary Dunstan provided the assist, creating the opportunity that allowed Bashiru to beat Japan goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki.

The goal gave the Flamingos a significant advantage heading into the closing minutes of the first half.

Japan attempted to respond, but Nigeria remained disciplined and protected their lead until the interval.

For the Nigerian players and coaching staff, the opening goal provided an important confidence boost against an opponent known for its technical ability and organisation.

Umejiaku Extends Nigeria’s Advantage

Nigeria started the second half with the same attacking purpose that had characterised their performance before the break.

Just two minutes after the restart, the Flamingos doubled their advantage through Oluebube Umejiaku.

Esther Stephen supplied the assist, allowing Umejiaku to advance towards goal before producing an excellent finish over the advancing Japanese goalkeeper.

The goal made it 2-0 and placed Nigeria in a commanding position with the trophy within reach.

Umejiaku’s contribution proved particularly important, as she continued to trouble Japan’s defensive structure and demonstrated the attacking quality that had helped Nigeria reach the final.

Her performance was later recognised with the Player of the Match award.

With a two-goal cushion, the Flamingos had an opportunity to manage the contest, although Japan remained dangerous and continued searching for a route back into the game.

Japan Mount Late Comeback Attempt

Japan refused to surrender despite the difficult position.

The Japanese side increased their attacking pressure as the second half progressed, attempting to disrupt Nigeria’s defensive organisation and create clear scoring opportunities.

Their persistence finally produced a breakthrough in the 80th minute.

Fuki Ito found the net after receiving a pass from Anri Ito, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and giving Japan renewed hope.

The goal changed the atmosphere of the closing stages, with Japan pushing forward in search of an equaliser that could force the final beyond normal time.

Nigeria, however, showed composure under pressure.

The Flamingos defended their advantage, remained organised and prevented Japan from finding another breakthrough.

Despite five minutes of added time, the Nigerian players held firm until the final whistle confirmed their historic triumph.

Nigeria Become Africa’s First U-17 Women’s World Champions

The victory carries significance beyond the result itself.

For years, African nations have competed at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup without managing to lift the trophy.

Nigeria’s achievement has now changed that history.

The Flamingos became the first African team to win the competition, establishing a new milestone for women’s football across the continent.

The result also reinforces Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading nations in women’s football development.

Although the country’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have enjoyed considerable success on the continental stage, this achievement gives the next generation of Nigerian players a global title of their own.

It also provides an important example of what can be achieved through investment in youth development, competitive opportunities and sustained support for women’s football.

Flamingos Overcome Difficult Start to Reach the Final

Nigeria’s road to the championship was not without challenges.

The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Poland, immediately placing pressure on their chances of progressing through the tournament.

However, the team responded positively, recovering from the disappointing opening result and producing a series of improved performances.

Their determination became particularly evident in the knockout rounds, where they continued to demonstrate attacking quality and defensive resilience.

A convincing 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals secured Nigeria’s place in the final and gave them an opportunity to compete for their first U-17 women’s world title.

Japan presented another difficult challenge, but the Flamingos delivered when it mattered most.

Their 2-1 victory completed a remarkable turnaround from the opening defeat and confirmed their status as world champions.

A New Chapter for Nigerian Women’s Football

FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Nigeria following the historic victory, recognising the importance of the achievement.

The triumph is expected to provide further encouragement for young female footballers in Nigeria and across Africa.

For the players, the title represents the reward for months of preparation, determination and commitment. For Nigerian supporters, it is a moment of national pride and a result that will remain part of the country’s football history.

The Flamingos have also demonstrated that African teams can compete for and win major global youth competitions.

Their success could inspire greater attention towards grassroots women’s football, particularly in identifying and developing talented young players.

Nigeria’s achievement in Morocco is therefore more than a tournament victory. It is a statement about the growing potential of women’s football in Africa.

After overcoming Poland, defeating Brazil in the semi-finals and beating Japan in the final, the Flamingos have completed a remarkable championship campaign.

Nigeria are officially FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup champions for the first time in their history.
