An escalating dispute within the legal and religious communities has intensified following the leak of private audio recordings and text messages involving a legal practitioner and a prominent former member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Funke Ashekun.

The leaked material, which features intimate exchanges and personal recordings, has sparked a contentious debate over professional ethics, legal boundaries, and the bitter public fallout among former members of the MFM.

The Leaked Materials

The controversy centres on Mrs Boluwatife Akinbo Maybee, a legal practitioner who has recently represented Funke Ashekun—a vocal critic of the MFM church and its leadership.

The dynamic of this legal and personal circle shifted dramatically following the release of audio files and text messages. In the recordings, Mrs Akinbo Maybee is allegedly heard singing and exchanging affectionate messages with Mr Ayotunde Richard, a Lagos-based married man and former MFM member who was previously aligned with Ashekun’s public campaigns.

Following a fracture in their professional relationship, Mr Richard exited the network and began publishing internal details across various social media platforms. His public disclosures allege a pattern of strategic manipulation within the group, including blackmail, institutional disruption, and the targeted recruitment of disaffected ex-church members.

Professional Standards Under Scrutiny

The public release of these private communications has moved beyond simple personal friction, raising specific questions within Nigerian legal circles regarding the strict ethical standards required of legal professionals.

Under the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners in Nigeria, lawyers are bound by strict obligations regarding integrity, institutional decorum, and the avoidance of conflicts of interest. Critics from both the public and legal sectors have questioned whether the close, personal nature of the communications disclosed by Mr Richard compromises the professional distance and discretion expected of an officer of the court.

Context of the Dispute

The fallout is the latest development in a broader, highly publicised campaign targeting Dr Daniel Olukoya and the MFM administration. Observers note that the inner conflicts amongst these prominent critics have frequently overshadowed the initial substance of their institutional grievances.

While supporters of Mrs Akinbo Maybee point to the private nature of the leaked correspondence and the potential for targeted character assassination by former allies, opponents argue that the conduct displayed in the public domain undermines the credibility of the ongoing legal challenges.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has consistently maintained that legal practitioners must uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, irrespective of personal relationships or the emotionally charged nature of high-profile litigation. As the public disclosures continue, calls for a formal review of the ethical implications of the case are growing within the legal community.
