The long-standing stability of Ogbomosoland has faced a dramatic shift as former federal lawmaker, Senator Hamzat Ayoade Adeseun, formally resigned his position as the Mayegun of Ogbomosoland.

Senator Adeseun cited deep-seated concerns regarding the current leadership style, rising local tensions, and alleged divisive actions within the historic town.

A Resignation Rooted in Friction

This high-profile departure follows weeks of public friction. The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, had previously announced Adeseun’s indefinite suspension in a letter dated 23 March 2026. Signed by Palace Secretary Toyin Ajamu, the palace cited “insubordination and disrespect” as the primary grounds for the sanction.

However, Adeseun has now seized the narrative. In a direct letter to the monarch, the former Senator declared his resignation takes immediate effect. He noted that the decision had been weighed since the early months of the King’s ascension.

Respect for Tradition vs. Modern Grievances

Senator Adeseun clarified that his delay in stepping down was a mark of respect for the Sounship. He sought to honour the late Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, who conferred the title upon him five years ago.

“In these circumstances, I cannot in good conscience continue to operate as a Chief under your leadership,” Adeseun stated during a press conference.

He alleged that the monarch’s approach has actively undermined the peace and unity that Ogbomoso has enjoyed for generations.

Allegations of Overreach and Division
The former Mayegun raised several alarms regarding the Ogbomoso leadership crisis, including:

  • Supremacy Disputes: Alleged friction with autonomous rulers such as the Olugbon of Orile Igbon and the Onpetu of Ijeru.
  • Religious Interference: Adeseun highlighted the ongoing leadership tussle involving the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso and attempts to control the Central Mosque.
  • Targeting Community Groups: He cited attempts to dissolve the leadership of Ogbomoso Parapo Worldwide before judicial intervention.

Senator Adeseun further alleged the “harassment and intimidation” of respected figures, including Dr Saka Adegbite Balogun and Alhaji Monsur Ayoade Ejide. He argued these actions have disrupted the Ogbomosoland chieftaincy dispute beyond mere palace politics.

A Call for Government Intervention

Despite the exit, the Senator highlighted his track record of service, including the establishment of the National Biotechnology Development Agency centre and the Federal Polytechnic Ayede.

He concluded by urging the Oyo State Government to intervene urgently. Adeseun warned that if the unrest continues, it could pose wider security risks to the region. While his formal role has ended, he reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Ogbomosoland through dialogue and peace.
