Tragedy has struck the Imiringi community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following the striking to death of a JSS1 pupil by lightening on Thursday.

The pupil, identified as Stephen Akanama, was struck death while playing a football match under the thunderstorm that accompanied a heavy downpour.

The deceased was a pupil of Matha Day Secondary School located in the Immirrigi community.

It was gathered that the deceased, who is from the Kolo community in Ogbia Local Government Area and residing with his Aunt at Imirringi, was in the company of his age mates, playing football at the open field when the lightning struck him dead.

Daily Trust reports an eye witness as saying that the deceased was trying to retrieve the ball from across the land used as a football field when he was struck by the lightning.

“A woman rushed to the house to tell us that our brother is dead.

“I could not believe it and rushed to the scene. Upon sighting him on the ground, we rushed him to Christ the King hospital and he was confirmed dead on arrival,” the source said.

When contacted, the spokesman for the State Police Command, SP Asimin Butswat, said the incident has not been reported at the Kolo Divisional Headquarters that is covering the area.
