A devastating early morning fire outbreak has razed large sections of the popular Bode Market in the Molete area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The inferno, which reportedly began at approximately 3:00 AM on Friday, has destroyed goods and properties worth millions of Naira, striking a heavy blow to local traders in one of the city’s critical commercial hubs.
Emergency Services Deploy to Scene
According to eyewitnesses and early responders on the ground, the fire spread rapidly across the closely packed stalls before emergency services could be fully mobilised.
In a massive containment effort, more than seven of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency trucks were deployed to the scene. Firefighters battled the raging flames for hours to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring residential blocks within the densely populated Molete axis.
Community Joins Forces as Police Secure Area
As the fire raged, local youth and community assistants rose to the occasion, forming manual bucket brigades and assisting emergency officials to salvage what remained of the properties.
Officers from the Oyo State Police Command were also deployed to the area early Friday morning. Law enforcement personnel successfully cordoned off the perimeter to maintain law and order, preventing potential looting and ensuring the safety of first responders.
The community effort was vital in keeping the fire under control before additional trucks arrived. People risked a lot to help their neighbors,” said one local resident.
Cause of Outbreak Remains Unknown
As of the time of filing this report, the official cause of the Bode Market fire incident has not been determined. Officials from the state fire service have indicated that a full investigation will commence once the site is entirely cooled and secured.
No official casualties have been confirmed, though the economic toll on the market community is expected to be severe.
