National leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Tuesday visited Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, to condole with the state over the recent Oriire abduction of teachers and pupils.
The victims were abducted by gunmen from Yawota and Esinele communities in the Oriire Local Government Area.
The delegation was led by the SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Gombe, and the party’s presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo. Governor Makinde received the opposition politicians at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
SDP Demands Action on Oriire Abduction
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the meeting, Prof. Gombe noted that the delegation visited Governor Makinde to sympathise with him and the people of the state over the abduction.
The SDP National Chairman lauded Governor Makinde’s efforts on the abduction, stressing that leadership is about securing the lives and property of the people as well as making provision for their welfare.
The purpose of our visit is to condole with His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, the government and the good people of Oyo State, on the incident that happened at Oriire Local Government, and to see what we can do together to avert such menace from happening again, not just in Oyo State but across the length and breadth of Nigeria as a whole.
Calls to Overhaul Federal Security Architecture
Also speaking with newsmen, the presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, called on the federal government to prioritise the security of lives and properties of the people, provide necessary gadgets for the security agencies and strengthen the security architecture to prevent insurgency in the country.
The Social Democratic Party delegation also included the Deputy National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, and the Oyo State gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Michael Okunlade. The Lagos State gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Femi Olaniyi, was also present at the meeting.
The Oyo State Governor thanked the delegation for their solidarity. He stated that the state is working with security agencies to secure the release of the pupils and teachers. The administration also noted that it will continue to review its local security architecture to protect rural schools.
